Web design | 2012 style

Expectations for websites are evolving. The old 2003 style jumble on the front page might work if it’s a site like your local newspaper where you know the layout. Anything else, it’s tedious, uninteresting and too much to deal with for that time of day. Or, any time of day.

Tiny, poor images, unfocussed writing, that leaves you with little sense of what is actually being offered. A few design clichés. In fact, too much design, too little relevant content. The days of those tiny images on a website are gone. High speed broadband, ie 20+MB/sec and ISPs with 75GB monthly downloads are here.

People are impatient. If it’s not obvious what the site is about in 3 seconds it’s time to click on. An arresting front page is imperative.

The philosophy here is pretty simple and you may have heard it before: a picture is worth a thousand words. The image is what counts, what draws users in.

Just like flicking through a magazine, the images should tell most of the story, set the mood. Images have to be fresh, bold and catch the attention. Then, if people are really interested the text needs to be more than just something for Google to index.

Concise, informative paragraphs. Real content. Sounds obvious. Just ain’t so easy to produce.
